The Manchester Monarchs won their seventh game in a row and their third game this weekend, defeating the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday afternoon, 2-1.
Matt Schmalz opened the contest’s scoring, intercepting a deflected rebound with the back of his stick, sliding across the goal’s mouth and behind Norfolk netminder Ty Reichenbach.
Norfolk tied up the contest halfway through the second period during a 3-on-5 power play. There, defenceman T.J. Melancon tucked away one-timer above the shoulder of new Manchester goaltender Branden Komm.
The game remained in a stalemate until Matt Buckles scored the game winning goal with just under two minutes left in the contest.
With the win, Manchester (15-7-1-1) grows their lead atop the ECHL North Division to 4 points over the Reading Royals and Wheeling Nailers.
The Monarchs return to the ice on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. puck drop in Jacksonville, followed by games on Thursday and Friday in Greenville, South Carolina against the Swamp Rabbits.
