Bomb Squad: ‘Crude improvised explosive device’ found on West Street

MANCHESTER, NH – A suspicious device was located in the rear of 91 West Street at approximately 10.30 a.m. by a resident, who found what looked like an explosive device on the ground under some leaves.

Police responded to 96 West Street about a device that was located in the rear of 91 West Street. The garage owner stated his neighbor was cleaning the backyard of 91 West St. when he located a suspicious device on the ground. The small device was buried under leaves and appeared to be old and possibly inert.

The garage owner placed the device inside his office before contacting police. New Hampshire State Police Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) arrived on scene a short time later to examine and dispose of the suspicious object.

Manchester Police spoke with officials from the Manchester School District about West High School, which is located several blocks away. West High School was placed in a secured campus for a short period of time until State Troopers removed the suspicious device.

New Hampshire State Police examined the object and determined it to be a “crude improvised explosive device.” The object was removed by EOD members and taken to their facility to be properly disposed of. Investigators do not know how long the crude device had been in the yard.
