MANCHESTER, NH – An early-morning balcony fire was caused by careless smoking, according to fire officials.

Just before 1:30 a.m. crews were sent to 106 W. River Drive for an alarm activation box for smoke in the building. Upon arrival Engine 5 was notified of a fire on the third floor balcony on the north side of the building. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and stopped it from running the roof line. The fire was held to the area and apartment of origin. Upon investigation the cause was determined to be improper disposal of smoking materials on the deck. No residents were displaced and no injuries reported.

Cost of damages was estimated at $5,000.
