MANCHESTER, NH – Studio 550 has announce the 2016 Think Outside the Box list of artists and sponsors. This is the second year of the public art project, where local artists are chosen to paint their designs onto traffic signal boxes in Manchester’s downtown.  The goal of the project is to beautify the city by infusing art, color, and creativity into the urban landscape, while also deterring tagging. It is a partnership between InTown Manchester, The City of Manchester’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen and Highway Department, and Studio 550 Art Center.

The artists are James Chase, Jyl Dittbenner, Jasmyn Gray, Sam Harrington, and Anthony Williams.

This project takes no public dollars to implement, so it would not be possible without the support of private sponsoring organizations. Sponsors can support an artist’s design in full, or give a smaller amount as a partial sponsorship.  WMUR- News 9, Radisson Hotel – Downtown Manchester, and Dyn are each fully sponsoring an artist’s piece, with Dyn sponsoring two artist boxes.  The TITLE Boxing Gym of Manchester, First Sign, Inc., and The Amoskeag Fishways are providing partial sponsorships. As a result, there will be a total of five boxes paired with an artist this year.

Artists will begin to paint in June and should be finished by August. One artist, Sam Harrington, will test having her design transferred onto a vinyl wrap and having that adhered to the box rather than painting it on manually.
