MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Arts Commission (M|A|C) is presenting a new art exhibit on display at City Hall on Elm Street in Manchester. The public is encouraged to visit anytime during City Hall business hours to view Tarja Cockell’s works. In addition, the public is invited to an opening reception on April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cockell will be present to discuss her art work.
A native of Finland, Cockell has a degree in textile and design, majoring in weaving. She worked as a weaving teacher before moving to USA. Her fiber art explores traditional textile techniques with a contemporary twist. Motifs vary from abstract to representational images and are often merely suggestive, hinting at shapes and forms. She strives to expand the boundaries of weaving by achieving a more painterly sensibility that weaving alone does not offer. To fully express her artistic intention, she incorporates several different techniques such as dyes, paint, collage and stitching to create a layered, dimensional effects.
