HAMPSTEAD, NH — No one was injured in a mishap on Big Island Pond in Hampstead that could have ended tragically, after a utility vehicle two women were riding on broken through thin ice.

Around 4:30 p.m. on January 8, 2017, New Hampshire Conservation Officer Shawn MacFadzen responded to Big Island Pond in Hampstead for a report of an OHRV that had gone through the ice.

Ashley Wright, 30, of Hampstead, sustained non-life threatening injuries after the UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) that she  was operating broke through about two inches of ice covering Big Island Pond.

The UTV was submerged in 6 to 8 feet of water in the area of the pond by Summer Street in Hampstead.  Wright and her passenger, Arielle Gendron of Londonderry, were able to get themselves to safety before the UTV submerged to the bottom of the pond.

NH Fish and Game reminds the public to use caution while on the ice, as thickness can change from one location of a waterbody to another location on the same waterbody.
