CONCORD, NH – Two people were injured in an early morning crash Tuesday on I-93 in Windham after a truck driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed, which caused another driver to hit the overturned truck.

At about 5:18 a.m. New Hampshire State Police Troopers responded to the two-vehicle vehicle crash in the northbound lanes, in Windham.

Joseph Vachereau, 29, of Manchester was operating a white box truck and fell asleep, causing the truck to strike the guardrail on the right side of the roadway. The truck rolled over onto its side blocking all lanes of travel. Carmine Macri, 59, of Manchester, was operating a 2014 Subaru and struck the box truck after it rolled onto its side.  As a result of the crash, a large amount of diesel fuel from the box truck spilled onto the highway. The highway was shut down for approximately three hours due to the cleanup effort, and traffic was diverted off the Interstate at Exit 3 in Windham.

Macri and his passenger Annemarie Macri, 57, of Manchester were transported to the Elliot Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, primarily due to the airbags deploying. The driver of the box truck was not injured.

Members of The New Hampshire State Police Troops B and G were on scene handling the investigation with assistance of Windham, and Londonderry Police and Fire Departments as well as NH Department of Transportation.

Anyone with further information about the crash is asked to contact Trooper Dejesus at 603-672-3333.
