MANCHESTER, NH – Firefighters rescued two dogs from a fire Monday morning at a two-family home at 612 Howe Street. One of the dogs did not survive, according to fire officials.

Crews were dispatched to the two-alarm fire just before 9 a.m. where heavy fire and smoke conditions were showing from the 2 ½-story wood frame building. A crew from Rescue 1 did a primary search while other companies went inside to attack the blaze, as two ladder companies performing roof and horizontal ventilation.

Two dogs were found inside the residence, one in each of the two apartments. One of the dogs did not survive, said Deputy Fire Marshal Paul King.

A second alarm was called to assist with overhaul operations and to check for fire extension throughout the building. It took six engine companies and three Ladder companies to bring the fire under control, said District Fire Chief Al Poulin.

The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen area of one of the apartments, although the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, said King.
