MANCHESTER, NH – A woman was charged for possession of crack cocaine and heroin after a routine traffic stop on Wednesday.

Manchester Police Officers Mark Harrington and Matthew McDonald conducted a motor vehicle stop Dec.  9, at 5:40 p.m., in the area of Bridge and Elm streets, after observing a vehicle traveling with defective equipment. Officer Harrington approached the operator, Erica Murphy, 32, of Manchester, while Officer McDonald spoke with a male passenger.

Officer Harrington allegedly observed Murphy reaching down toward the floor as he approached the vehicle. He began speaking with Murphy and noticed a clear plastic bag protruding from under her leg. She allowed the officer to see what the object was. Although the small piece of cellophane was empty, it is known to police as a common way to transport illegal drugs.

Murphy got out of the vehicle and gave the officer permission to search her Ford Focus. Officer Harrington located several small rocks of crack-cocaine, empty plastic bags, a digital scale and a glass cylindrical object on the floor beneath Murphy’s seat. He also located a small quantity of heroin inside of Murphy’s purse, so she was arrested and charged with two counts possession of a controlled drug. She will appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on December 10, 2015.

The passenger was released from the scene and was not charged in the incident.
