MANCHESTER, NH – Three days after Gov. Maggie Hassan announced her intention to run for a U.S. Senate seat, Executive Councilor Colin Van Ostern will announce his own aspiration, to become the Democratic candidate for governor.

Van Ostern will make it official Oct. 8 at Silvertech, during a planned roundtable of business and education leaders.

He has an extensive business and education background, having worked for Stonyfield yogurt in business management, and Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business. He helped launch Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America, a lower-cost option for working adults interested in earning a college degree.

In a prepared statement released in advance of the roundtable, Van Ostern outlined his vision for New Hampshire.

“I see a future for our state that is accelerated by passenger rail from Boston to Manchester, brightened by solar panels, supported by growing small businesses, and strengthened by good access to quality health care – whether it’s birth control at Planned Parenthood or addiction treatment services at local health centers … We will keep taxes low and bring forward new plans and ideas to attract and keep more young people, young families, startups and growing businesses here in our state,” Van Ostern said.

“That’s been my own life over the past 15 years – I moved here for a job in my 20s, found a strong community, worked for world-class employers, fell in love with a New Hampshire girl, and we’re now raising two New Hampshire boys whose future means everything to us. I love this state and I’ll work hard to keep it moving forward.”

Van Ostern was elected to the state’s Executive Council in 2012 and lives in Concord with his wife and two sons.

He says he will continue holding roundtable discussions around the state to focus on particular issues. Upcoming sessions will include:

  • NASHUA: Boosting business growth through passenger rail & clean energy jobs
  • SEACOAST: Creating the opportunity for debt-free college
  • CONCORD: Closing the opportunity gap through early childhood education & support
  • WESTERN NH: Expanding health care access – including drug addiction treatment & prevention and access to women’s health services.
  • NORTH COUNTRY: Strengthening our rural economy
