MANCHESTER, NH – David Chase Rondon, 27, of Manchester, was found guilty Aug. 30 before Judge Kenneth Brown in Hillsborough County Superior Court North of one count of class A felony first-degree assault with a firearm; two counts of felony criminal threatening with a firearm; and one count of class B felony reckless conduct with a firearm. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on one count of attempted murder.

Hillsborough County Attorney Dennis Hogan announced Rondon was sentenced Sept. 23 to a total of 20 to 40 years in State Prison with an additional 20 to 40 years suspended for 40 years.

On October 26, 2015, at noon Manchester police responded to a report of shots fired near Enright Park. An investigation led by Manchester Det. Patrick Houghton revealed that Rondon lured the adult male victim to Enright Park by telling the victim that he would pay back a financial debt. The victim did not know the location of the park and was driven there by a friend. When the victim and his friend approached, the victim was speaking with Rondon on the phone and saw him approach from Enright Park at the corner of Lincoln and Laurel streets.

As the victim and the friend came closer, Rondon placed his phone in his pocket, pulled a bandana up over his face, removed a gun from his pocket and fired six shots in the area where the two men were standing. The victim and his friend ran from the area, but the victim was struck in the ankle by a bullet. The friend escaped unharmed. Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store also showed pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the time of the shooting. Bullets also hit the side of the convenience store, a parked car, the steps to a house next door, and a chair in the front yard of the house. Rondon immediately fled the scene and drove to New York City. He was located, arrested by authorities and returned to New Hampshire for trial on charges of Attempted Murder, first-degree assault, criminal threatening and reckless conduct.

The jury convicted Rondon on four of the five counts. They could not reach a unanimous verdict on the charge of attempted murder. At the sentencing hearing Friday, the State reiterated the facts of the case and pointed out to Judge Brown how Rondon essentially lured the victim into an ambush. The State also pointed out how dangerous such conduct was in a downtown neighborhood at noon.

The State informed the Court Rondon had also previously served a year in jail in New York for a felony gun possession in 2012. The State asked for a 25 to 50 year sentence. The defense asked for a 9 to 20 year sentence. Judge Brown sentenced Rondon to a total of 20 to 40 years in prison with additional suspended time: 10 to 20 years stand committed on one count of criminal threatening; a consecutive 10 to 20 years stand committed on a second criminal threatening; 10 to 20 years on first-degree assault, all of which the Court suspended for 40 years; and, 10 to 20 years on reckless conduct, also all suspended for 40 years. Rondon was also ordered to make restitution to the Victim’s Compensation Program of up to $30,000 for crime-related expenses and to have no contact with the victims. Judge Brown told Rondon, “I want the message to be clear that this conduct won’t be tolerated.”

Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Brad Bolton, First Assistant County Attorney Michael Valentine and Victim Advocate Brigid Davis represented the State in the prosecution.
