GLOUCESTER, Mass. –  Chief Leonard Campanello of the Gloucester Police Department has been placed on indefinite administrative leave, as of Sept. 13. Last week on Sept. 8 Gloucester Police Sgt. Det. Sean Conners of  the Gloucester Police Department was also placed on administrative leave.

No information was available as to whether the leaves were related, or the reason for the action.

On Sept. 13 Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken notified the Gloucester Police Department that Chief Campanello was placed on indefinite administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation initiated by the city. Because Assistant Police Chief John McCarthy is vacationing out of the country, Acting Police Chief David Quinn is temporarily at the helm.

“I want to assure our residents, business owners, and visitors that the Gloucester Police Department is fully operational. The work of the department continues, and the safety of all is our mission and number one concern,” Quinn said in a statement issued Wednesday.

“The Gloucester Police Department ANGEL Initiative continues unchanged. The Gloucester Police Department received a participant on Tuesday evening, and the program remains open and able to place participants into recovery programs.

Assistant Chief McCarthy will return to work on Thursday and assume the role of Acting Chief at that time.
