Manchester City Library Foundation’s Gala Fundraiser is set for Sept. 23 and features bestselling author Dennis Lehane, author of “Mystic River,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “Shutter Island.”

The gala begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Palace Theatre as part of the Carpenter Memorial Library’s 100th Birthday Celebration.

According to the event preview, Lehane grew up in Boston and has published nine more novels with William Morrow & Co. that have been translated into more than 30 languages and become international bestsellers. His latest novel, “World Gone By,” was published in August 2014. Lehane was also a staff writer on the acclaimed HBO series “The Wire” and is currently a writer-producer on the 4th season of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”

Screen shot 2014-09-21 at 9.09.57 PMThree of his novels – “Mystic River,” “Gone, Baby, Gone,” and “Shutter Island” – have been adapted into award-winning films. In addition, “Mystic River” was a finalist for the 2001 PEN/Winship Award and won the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, the Dilys Award from the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association and the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction from the Massachusetts Center for the Book. His novel, “Live By Night,” was awarded the 2013 Edgar Award for Best Novel of the Year.

Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked as a counselor with mentally handicapped and abused children, waited tables, parked cars, drove limos, worked in bookstores, and loaded tractor-trailers. Lehane and his wife, Angie, divide their time between Boston and the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Denise Van Zanten, Library Director for the Manchester City Library, said the Library Foundation provides financial support to the Manchester City Library, and over the past several years has supported the funding for items such as: downloadable eBooks and audiobooks, an AC unit, LCD computer monitors, a projector and screen for the auditorium, and many other important items.

Tickets are $29.50, or $100 including preferred seating and meet and greet,  and available at the Palace Theatre website.
